They are in the process of adopting a little girl from Colombia; we don't know her name yet, so we call her Zaza. My family and I are using the fabric and scraps we already have, as well as donated fabrics and thrift-store finds, to create unique messenger bags, totes, and purses. All profits are donated towards Zaza's adoption.Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.comBlogger288125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-210683833437427015.post-25344467100249289732012-01-10T20:56:00.000-08:002012-01-10T20:58:46.128-08:00"Zaza" Came HomeOur Bags for Zaza fundraiser has been wrapped up for awhile now. But I was just doing some cleaning and I noticed we forgot one important update:

"Zaza" came home in December 2010. She was 7 years old and that time and it's all just been SO AMAZING.

Thanks again for your help!Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-210683833437427015.post-18981339975561423532010-08-04T12:03:00.000-07:002010-08-04T12:23:38.132-07:00Important Updates!Hi All,

It's been awhile, eh? I didn't really close things off neatly here as I'd kept hoping to start up again. Well, that hasn't happened, but Linda, Zaza's Momma-in-waiting, has fired up a new blog site and she and Grace are sewing up a storm.

http://bagsforzaza.wordpress.com/

And even more exciting - Rick and Linda, Zaza's Parents-in-waiting, have topped the waitlist and their file is now being sent to the region in Colombia where Zaza is waiting! They should have a referral, with name and photo, in 30-60 days! Stay in touch with the process at Zaza's Adoption Blog.

And finally, I never reported how much we raised in total: $6869.61! Not bad for sewing together a bunch of scraps? I'm still using my bag daily ... are you?

Thank you all again for your support and we look forward to seeing you over at the new site:

http://bagsforzaza.wordpress.com/

Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-210683833437427015.post-34676410190226183782009-08-25T08:37:00.000-07:002009-08-25T08:40:22.483-07:00Patty H.
Patty H. - you've won Fuzzy Dots!

Please email BagsforZaza@gmail.com within 1 week to arrange payment and postage/pickup.

Thank you for your support in this adventure to adopt a Colombian orphan.Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-210683833437427015.post-82633962929500164572009-08-17T16:18:00.000-07:002009-08-17T19:29:46.577-07:00Fuzzy DotsHi All,

Egads. Still, it captured Anne's spirit and vocabulary endearingly. I have also been thinking of making a stuffed teddy bear for Zaza with clothes that she could dress it in. But, in the story, Anne received a teddy bear from one of her foster parents and she wishes the whole time that it could have truly been a doll. Her first doll ever, with puffed sleeves and long blond hair.

So, I made Jennie Lynne... and love her. But then decided that I want Zaza's doll to have a slightly darker skin tone and black hair. So we decided to offer Jennie Lynne on Bags for Zaza... the first Doll for Zaza.

Jennie Lynne is made of vintage linen from my grandmother's fabric collection. The brim of the bonnet has buckram sewn in to keep it stiff so the sun won't shine in her eyes.

Jennie Lynne's face is an iron-on design that has been enhanced with colored pencils. Thanks to my friend Cheryl being at the right place at the right time when they were offered to anyone who could use them! She thought of me and Bags for Zaza!

It is comprised of neutral colors to wear with many outfits. The flap has an off-white 100% floral embossed cotton fabric and a black and white cotton fabric with gold butterflies and white peony’s. I added gold braid for an elegant touch.

The back has the black floral fabric and a silk and cotton blend material with raised polka dots for the double pocket. I decorated the pocket with a silk striped fabric and a vintage off-white button.

Don't forget to click on each picture to see the fabulous textures up close.

I used the above three fabrics on the under flap making sure I put one of the cute butterflies where it shows. Yes, it's a new pattern! Exciting! I saw this style while browsing through the pattern books at JoAnn's store and loved the construction and all the pockets. It is called a "birder's bag" because someone who loves watching birds needed a bag for her binoculars, bird guide, notepad, water bottle and snack. [Editor's note: However, we don't recommend keeping birds in this bag.] But I realize there are many organized women who may not watch birds who would also appreciate the useful design.

I dug out a donated roll of this fabulous tan, beige, brown and Robin's Egg blue designer fabric. It is so rich and textured... nice for running your fingers along. The other fabrics used are denim, light blue cotton/poly blend with tiny shiny dots and a soft tan cotton "canvas". This purse is a black and white wonder with a bold cricket stripe in lime.

The bottom and straps are made of a woven wool. The rest of the exterior is of heavy designer cotton. This chic little number is a lightweight bag so your arm is not burdened down while shopping and looking chic. I did use iron-on interfacing on the entire bag to give it some form and stiffness. The front and the back are identical.

The inside is constructed of a pale lime green polyester that feels and looks like silk. A scrap of a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt stitched by my grandmother or her mother, lime green chenille fabric from Becca, hand sewn embroidered pink flowers and raised "ribbon" from a tea towel, denim, machine embroidered flowers and cut work from a second hand table cloth, denim, cream canvas looking cotton with hot pink roses, buttery yellow and cream striped denim, and again, more machine embroidered yellow flowers form the table cloth, lighter denim and (the grand finale) and hand embroidered pink dogwood flowers from a table cloth that my mother made almost 50 years ago. (Way to go, Mom!)

The front flap is decorated with pale yellow chenille rick-rack, white lace with pearls, green and white striped satin ribbon and hot pink and white gingham ribbon. There are also vintage buttons in baby blue and light green, as well as a newer heart shaped pink button. The front flap is lined with denim.

Under the flap is an edge from mom's table cloth with more of the dainty yellow lace edging. Cute blue and green button mark the line in the center of the two pockets.

The sides and bottom of the bag are two shades of denim. The cell pocket is trimmed with the corner from mother's tablecloth with handmade dainty yellow lace.

The faded denim on the bag is from a pair of Jill's old Calvin Klein jeans. The pocket is trimmed with pink and white gingham ribbon and a light pink and tiny yellow antique buttons.

The strap is knotless and measures 52", the perfect length to sling across one shoulder for hands-free garage sailing. This bag is not the typical BFZ size. It measures 11.5” long, 9.5” tall and 2.75” wide. A smaller, cozier version of our large carrier bags. The straps, however, are longer than usual, measuring 49” the way they are tied in the photos. It can be shortened or lengthened by changing the knot.

This collection of fabrics has a rich history, just like Mia’s Story. My friend, Regan, came over and was picking out fabrics for her bag while my mother was standing nearby wearing black pants with orange, red, pink and yellow flowers embroidered across the bottom of the legs. She asked if my mom was almost finished wearing those pants. :o) So the pants were donated to BFZ several days later.

Regan also bought a child’s sized Asian top with little men embroidered on it at a second hand store and brought it to me for her bag. Her bag was finished without the little men included. They are inside Mia’s Story as pockets with their original frog closure from the little shirt. (That was the surprise, in case you were wondering.) Thanks for your prayers and well wishes. I've decided to take a break from BFZ. I'm calling it a sabbatical. My family needs me right now. I'm not sure when I'll be back, but I'm definitely not giving it up all together. I still have tons of donated fabric to deal with (unfortunately it's spread all over my house still) and I've really loved this project.

But, the good news is that Linda and Grace would like to keep sewing. Our little Columbian Zaza still isn't home and there are still some expenses that need taking care of. So stay tuned...

What about Jenn V? Well, she's mostly sleeping these days. I guess that's what a li'l cupcake in the oven does to you. Yes ma'am, you heard right - she's expecting her first child. In between sleeping and getting ready for the new baby, she's not sure how much sewing she'll get done, but I suspect that we haven't seen the last of her.

If you want to be contacted when new bags are available, just follow the "Stay in Touch" instructions over in the right column.Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-210683833437427015.post-41026056576852983012009-05-22T09:08:00.000-07:002009-05-22T11:16:07.823-07:00Treading WaterHey all - sorry I've evaporated momentarily. I wasn't watching old Star Trek episodes, I promise. I've had a family upset this week and haven't been able to do anything in bag land.

I'm also having a bit of a think about priorities and how I can keep it all going. At the moment, I'm just treading water - not sinking, but not making it to shore either. Thankfully, my parents had me in swimming lessons before I could walk and I can tread water forever without sinking. Let's hope the metaphor holds up in real life.

As soon as I have it figured out and have had a good pow-wow with all involved, I'll let you know.

If you want me to contact you when new bags are available, just follow the "Stay in Touch" instructions over in the right column.

Happy Friday!Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-210683833437427015.post-9489339514307631152009-05-19T07:46:00.000-07:002009-05-19T08:08:21.223-07:00I Might Be a TrekkieJayP, Elvis Takes a Back Seat is all yours. Thank you so much!

I didn't post last night because I was at the new Star Trek movie. It was so great. I ran straight home and watched Season 1, Episode 1 of the original series. I totally forgot about blogs and bags. I've always enjoyed Star Trek, but was never able to watch any of the series too regularly. I'm kinda tempted to backtrack and watch them ALL now. I just checked. That's only 716 episodes all together. So, at 1 per night - that will only take me 2 years. Ha Ha. OK, perhaps that's a bit unrealistic. Dang. Maybe I can sew and watch TV at the same time.

I'm hoping to have a bag finished tonight. Stay tuned...Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-210683833437427015.post-84523623560206001342009-05-15T09:13:00.000-07:002009-05-15T09:50:45.212-07:00A Bag!I just surfed on over to my blog and noticed how it doesn't really look like there's a bag available. Where are the Bags you ask? Well, I'm not sure I like that tone ... but I know Linda is probably somewhere with her feet up, sipping virgin Margarita's. And of course, I'm just lazing around with a mud mask on my face and cucumbers on my eyes. Oh, wait - you mean those bags?

Linda was very keen and got all her sewing done before the weekend and sent me the pictures and everything. I started a bag, but at the spur of the moment dropped everything and drove over four hours to be with my Momma on Mother's Day. Therefore, I didn't sew. However, I did help get a load of fire wood. And I also managed to cut my lip, chip my tooth, and eat some dirt while on a little stroll through the forest. But all so worth it to hang out with my Momma.

So, here's Linda's bag and I'm back to the drawing board ... er ... cutting mat.

Elvis Takes a Back Seat

Bid on this bag by leaving a name and a bid in the comments section for the bag. God rest his soul. The entire outside of the bag is made out of tan and beige diamond patterned plush fabric. It looks like a couch. Perfect for the man who loves the couch. The fabric washes like a dream.

[Editors note: I think this bag is great for a lady, too - so if you're only sporting double X chromosomes, I'll still let you bid.]

The interior and the under side of the strap are a ribbed sturdy fabric that matches the dark diamonds. I had fun inside making pockets... a pen pocket, 3 business/credit card pockets, two versatile Zune or iPod pockets, as well as a large side pocket for a day timer or note pad. The folded newspaper would also fit in here nicely.

Elvis measures 13.5" long, 10" tall, and 2.5" wide. The strap is 40" long. Elvis would have added a few rhinestones or peacocks, but I think it would have held his blue suede shoes quite nicely.

About the Bags ~ FAQs ~ How to Bid
Jennie C.http://www.blogger.com/profile/03141060104151610960noreply@blogger.com9
