So Much Fun

I had so much fun at Puyallup's Sewing and Stitchery Expo today. I got to meet Rob and Corinne from ThreadBanger (such a fun site about sewing and upcycling) and I was just a little bit star-struck.

This week's bag biddie was fortunate enough to get two bags!
  • Little House in the Big Woods -- Valeera -- $40
    A Postcard to Heaven -- Valeera -- $40
Please email BagsforZaza@gmail.com within 1 week to arrange payment and postage/pickup.

Check back on Tuesday for more bags. And tell your friends! And have a nice day!

Thank you thank you thank you!

A Little Bit of News

Linda, Zaza's mama, has reported a bit of news over on her adoption blog.

And I have a little bit of adoption news myself - the first draft of our homestudy is done! But I'm frightened to read it. Terry already discovered a problem -- apparently he enjoys fishing trips with my step-Dad, Mark. Which he doesn't. But he loves mountain biking and playing hockey with Mark. Hi Mark! (For some history on our adoption, check out this post).

Anyhow, our bags this week are:
  • Little House in the Big Woods
  • A Postcard to Heaven
Bid on a bag by leaving a name and a bid in the comments section for the bag you want. Or you can just leave chatty comments as well. The highest bidder at 9pm (PST) on Saturday, February 28th gets the bag and ALL profits are put towards Zaza's adoption!

I've been wanting to do a bag with the 3R symbol on it for a long time. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! The early homesteaders, like Laura Ingalls Wilder's family, did this naturally. We have a LONG way to go in today's consumerist, throw-away culture. How do we function in this technological age without continuing to damage our planet? I'm still searching for the answers.

Little House in the Big Woods is our standard messenger bag. The outside has 2 back pockets and one small side pocket for your mobile phone, keys or library card. The inside has 2 pockets, as well.

The outdoor pics represent the colours the most accurately.

Light-weight Denim - my own stash of remnants.

Wool Plaid (burgandies and greens) - an old kilt from my Aunty Del's closet.

Pinwale Corduroy (greens and turquoise) - my mom's stash of remnants and ???.

Fuzzy Floral Drapery (avocado and white) - Kera B's stash of remnants.

A Postcard to Heaven was a fun purse to make, but also a challenge because I designed it and made my own pattern. This always takes longer as unforeseen situations arise.

It is a garnet colored evening or special occasion bag, which calls for something daintier.

I used a silk and cotton sample for the flap called Lacquer, with the pile being 100% silk. A silk striped material was used to make a corded edge. (It as one of the pieces that was over $100 per yd – so special). I gathered the main polyester, scrunchy material onto a striped silk band on the back and front of the bag. The sides and bottom are striped silk with beaded trim for a fun finish

The flower I made to decorate the front is a silk and polyester knit with a beaded center. I used shiny rayon thread to outline the flowers and to top stitch on the bag for added pizazz.

The lining is a decorator fabric with a dragonfly pattern which I padded for a softer feeling bag. It has a pocket topped with striped silk.

A Postcard to Heaven features a gold colored magnetic clasp to keep your treasures safe. NOTE: The clasp is strong and works better if you put a fingernail in it to release it, so as not to tear the material.

The straps are 42” long. The bag measures 10 ½" x 7" x 1 ½".

Shhhhhhhh

Wow - what a quiet week at BFZ. Perhaps everyone was recovering from Valentines festivities?

This week's bag biddie is:
  • Jane of Lantern Hill -- JDP -- $27
Words from a Fearless Heart -- apparently the perfect biddie for this bag was on vacation this week ... so we'll bring it back another week.

Please email BagsforZaza@gmail.com within 1 week to arrange payment and postage/pickup.

We have more bags to be posted on Tuesday. I'm really excited about the one I'm working on - hint: it's not pink :)

It's Pink Week at BFZ!

Well ... pinkish. As in dusty roses, delicious burgandies and scrumptious plums! Perhaps we had Valentines on the mind?

We reprogrammed the robots to step up production (they're very independent robots) and they've produced two new bags for your bidding excitement:

This week's bags are:
  • Words from a Fearless Heart
  • Jane of Lantern Hill

Jane of Lantern Hill changed quite a lot from conception to the bag you see before you today. I'd anticipated making one of our standard messenger bags. But after the lovely dusty rose fabric was washed and dried, I ended up with a smaller, thicker piece than I started with. Part of the fun of working with donations is that you have no idea what they're made of. Apparently this one is all wool!

Once I'd sewn the body of the bag together, I realized that it was just too thick for our standard flap and straps. My mother-in-law helped me figure out these sweet puffy straps.

The dusty rose felted wool that makes up the body of this bag has a great waffle texture and a fuzzy look that just makes you want to give it a little hug.

The outside features a small side pocket for your cell phone or sunglasses. And the top of the bag is pulled together with a tab and cute, pink, vintage buttons.

The inside of the bags has 5 pockets in totals. A double set of pink pockets with green trim and a triple set of green pockets with pink trim. Now is my lipstick in the pink pocket or the green pocket?

Jane of Lantern Hill is approximately 12" wide x 9.5" tall x 3.5" thick. The straps are 25" long.

If Robots Ran Bags for Zaza

If Robots ran Bags for Zaza, I'm sure that there would be several bags posted here right now. But robots don't have mouths to feed and overflowing toilets to mop up. But Bags for Zaza is run by lovely human ladies. And we have to do that stuff.

And at the moment, I'm not sure if we have one bag or two bags for you this week.

But the one I'm sure of is pink ... and cuddly. And different. And made by Jenn V. Completely not robot like.

P.S. Adorable image borrowed from this random blog.

~~

I actually spent more than a day on The Day's Work, but this bag will be a hard worker, so I felt the name was appropriate.

This fabulous wine coloured, wool-blend boucle started it's life as a lady's overcoat. I couldn't resist this thrift store find's $1 price tag. After a good washing (dry-clean only? i think not!) and a lot of snipping and stitching - it was reborn!

The front flap of this bag is a plaid houndstooth remnant discovered at another thrift store. It is black and white, with bits of red and tan.

The berry and tan flower adorning the flap is pinned on and can be moved, removed or worn on your jacket. The yarn for the pin came from Cousin Dawn's stash, which I was recently bequeathed. Thank you Dawn!

The outside of the bag features a back double pocket and a side cell pocket. The flap, straps and pockets are lined with a coordinating tan and wine floral cotton upholstery remnant.

This bag is very sturdy. I wouldn't hesitate to throw a textbook or even a laptop into this bag.

The Day's Work is lined with the coat's original lining, a gorgeous wine coloured satin. The inside double pocket (as well as the outside pocket and flower) is secured with a button from the original coat.

And just for fun - here's some pics of The Day's Work in progress.

Out of all the bags I've made, I think Laughter and Latte #2 is my favorite. It is another bag made from the recent high end donation. The body of the bag is a beautiful pink and brown linen blend. Because the materials I used this week are lighter in weight I lined them all with fusible lining. I used brown velvet to edge the flap, made a raised bow from a chenille swatch and trimmed it with brown braid.

The front has a double pocket with a vintage brown button. I used heavy brown cotton blend and pink and brown fabric for the front, the flap and the back – trimming them with brown braid. Pink thread top stitching was used in several places for added interest.

The straps, sides and bottom measure 2 ½ inches, smaller than our standard bag. I put the cell pocket on the back using the last little piece of the pink, matching the bow for accent and a diagonal patterned chenille sample piece.

The inside is flower inspired with the sides and bottom a white cotton blend with embroidered brown flowers. The double pocket and front are a daisy embossed brown print topped with pink and brown and a vintage button.

The bag is smaller than usual and 12¾ x 11½. The strap is 42 inches and is one piece, with no knot.

They're coming....

I managed to finish up a bag (finally) , so we'll have the big reveal later tonight.

All Through the Night (a terrific book!) is the name of my new bag. It is constructed from fabulous fabrics donated by my friend Cheryl, who was given some fabric samples which she passed on to me. I am in fabric HEAVEN! There are gorgeous silks from India and all kinds of colors and textured fabrics from Belgium, France and the U.K. They range in price from $59. to $125 per yd. What a blessing to help bring Zaza home. Can you imagine sewing material that is over $100 per yard?

The fabric front and back is called "Fushion" and is vicose and cotton with a lovely soft pile from Beligium. I made it with one piece of material and so the nap changes the color from back to front. It has shades of brown, tan and smokey blue. I used brown velvet upholstery material for the sides and top. The braided trim across front and back matches the brown tones.

I enjoyed designing this tote that measures 12x10x2 – smaller than usual. For a change I used black wooden handles and the bag closes with a magnetic clasp.

The lining is sewn from a beautiful orange SILK from India. There are two pockets inside, one for cell phone or glasses and the other is larger for additional storage. I used a rust striped fabric and silk for the pockets and trimmed them with brown braid. The sides are brown cotton.
