The Story of Doctor Dolittle

Click on any picture for a larger view.

Complete with Polynesia the parrot and a family of monkeys, The Story of Doctor Dolittle, is a whimsical edition to this week's menagerie of bags.

This purse (not a messenger bag) features a layer of fleece between the outside fabric and the lining, giving it a cushy quilted feel.

I found the blue and beige jungle fabric remnant at a thrift store and could not leave it behind. Seriously - I challenge you to find someone who would not have felt the same! Without taking a closer look, you don't notice the charming creatures, scampering through the pineapples and vines, ready to chatter at you when no one is looking.

Both sides feature an antique creamy beige button. And a little diagonal strip of grosgrain ribbon, donated by Colleen B.

The bag snaps closed to keep your valuables a little more secure. The snaps were a donation from Mary Ann M.

The bag is lined with a striped piece in multiple shades of blue and brown, which was a donation from ____ (can anyone fill in this blank?). The double pocket is made from an abandoned high school home-ec project and trimmed with solid brown.

The straps are interestingly only one long strap that threads through casings on the inside of the bag.

The purse measures 14" wide, 11" high, and the straps are about 14 1/2" long.

I used a pattern from a neat book (with slight modifications), so I'm obligated to give it some credit. "This is an original design by Amy Karol from her book Bend-the-Rules Sewing published by Potter Craft, 2007" [My review: There's mistakes and omissions that were really frustrating, but thankfully I borrowed it from the library. Very cute and inspirational.]

Bid on this bag by leaving your name and a bid in the comments section. Bidding starts at $25 and increases by whole $s please. Highest bidder at 8am (PDT) on Saturday, September 20th gets the BAG! Postage extra (from Abbotsford, BC). This bag was created by Jennie C.

I love this bag! The fabrics are great and the straps are very cool how they go inside the sides to pull it together. A fine addition to BFZ. Great job, Jennie, and very responsible of you to give credit. :o)

Welcome Sam and Mrs. P. I believe you are new here! New bidders for a new style - woohoo.

And thanks jar lady - I thought the strap(s) was a cool idea, too - but those dimensions were one of the missing elements in the book and the source of much frustration - so I mostly just glare at them.

"Jar Lady" hahahaha

That's my new nickname for her.

Hey Jennie,

What is up with the pocket knife in the bag?...hee.hee.

LaVonna ;)

The pocket knife is mostly for trimming loose threads - but works well on for all your cutting requirements. OK, let's be honest here - I mostly use the wine corkscrew and the tweezers - it's not my fault I have hairy moles!

Better be careful with that thing. You might poke your eye out. :)
